Overall Rating: 10 | Description:
I think, folks, we've found our File of the Week. I was going to run a vote on this to see what the community thought, but I really don't care; I just want to feature this baby on the front page. This, my friends, is a full-blown single-player campaign for CoDUO by the great Yorkshire Rifles with many goodies thrown in -- for starters, custom vehicle skins and textures by Geezer. Yeah, the six maps all look beautiful, seamlessly sewn together and all, but they also play just wonderfully; you will for sure get some awesome games out of these, so of course, I recommend the download. Check out the screenshots, and you'll be sold -- I guarantee it! Give the campaign a whirl, and leave your comments below.

-------------
A Single Player Campaign for Call of Duty United Offensive Expansion pack (CoDUO)
Concept/design/scripting/custom scripts/shaders/some textures by Yorkshire Rifles
Custom Vehicle Skins/some textures courtesy of Geezer
--------------------------
CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW
--------------------------
A 5 mission soviet campaign with additional intro and outro sequences
Simulates the 1942 defense of the Caucaus (kuban) area -
if you've seen the Sam Penkinpah film - Cross of Iron - then it is the same place, just a year earlier.
---------------------------
INSTALLATION
---------------------------
Take the file called
beyondrostov.pk3
and place it into your call of duty/uo folder
Start Call of Duty United Offensive (CoDUO) via a shortcut. Make certain that in the shortcuts properties there is no
+set developer 1
As I use an advanced custom made AI script for my spawners (to make them more useful)
using developer mode may cause script errors in the stock/original scripts. Set your shortcut properties to
+set developer 0
If you do not have +set developer on your shortcut then you should have no worries
When CoDUO has started bring down the console and type
map beyondrostov
and hit return/enter. NOTE beyondrostov is ALL ONE WORD
It should load up now. If you have problems seeing the first screens make certain that DRAWSTATUS is enabled.
Using the console type
cg_drawstatus 1
and hit return.
If you still have problems seeing the initial screens remove all additional mods from your call of duty/uo folder
---------------------------
DUAL CORE PROCESSOR ISSUES
---------------------------
Call of Duty United Offensive (CoDUO) is an older generation game and running it on a state-of-the-art dual core processor
may cause problems. Testing has shown that these performance problems may be overcome by disabling one of the processors.
Dont ask me how to do this I have a low-spec Dell.
---------------------------
GENERAL ISSUES
---------------------------
There are some issues with the clip/collision detection of vehicles models.
The most noticeable is with the T34 in the first mission which has its clip/collision detection to the side of the visible model.
If the player tries to move down the side of the model he is pushed out a little by this badly aligned models clip/collision map.
----
LAG
----
All of my maps push the game engine to its very limits (which turned out not to be hard).
If you experience lag or crashes, turn your graphics settings down.
I doubt this file will work on a Mac, sorry.

-------------------------
OTHER STUFF
-------------------------
Inside the Campaign
--------------------
There are 7 maps in total, an intro map, 5 mission maps and an outro map.
If you want to play them individually and not one after another here is the list of map and file names.
The map is what the mission is, the filename is what you want to use in the console,
eg--- map kuban2 ---for the second misison which is based at Krasnodar
Map Filename
----- --------
Intro beyondrostov
South of Bataysk kuban1
Towards Krasnodar kuban2
Maykop Oilfields kuban3
Battle of Novorossiysk kuban4
Seige of Novorossiysk kuban5
Outro kuban6
Tips
-----
Fire and maneuvour. Move fast and have a plan where you are going.
Try to go round the edge of a dangerous area - but sometimes you'll have to make a frontal assault.
These maps simulate large scale battles which have to be fought THROUGH.
If you hang back the AI will happily fight each other for hours.
Keep moving.
Watch your compass, it will tell you where to find things. That is why you need cg_drawstatus activated, or you can't see the compass.
cg_drawstatus 1 is activated as standard and would only be disabled if you the player or another mod you are using has done so.
Other other Stuff
------------------
This was all made on a low-spec Dell except for Geezer's vehicle skins. He has some sort of super computer which I cannot afford right now.
Geezer had many complaints about the quality and construction of the stock/original models.
I had many complaints about the limitations of the game engine.
Both of us agreed that it was not user friendly and only my psychotic dedication to finish what I set out to do enabled us to previal.
This is the last mod/map/campaign for CoDUO, and probably all other versions of CoD.
Once again thanks to Geezer for his professionalism with skinning and texturing and his mates for helping with the playtesting.
This took a good NINE months of my life.
You can play through it in less than 3 hours.
Enjoy!

MartySoCal Joined: January 28th, 2006 Posts: 77 | I'm having a weird problem running this map. The intro plays properly, the first map starts fine with the truck ride, the battle starts at the trench and friendly's are mostly dressed as Germans (With Russian names)! Once I get into the first bunker, the play stops and I get a script error message:
"actor_axis_wehrmacht_soldier_Kar98k
at (-5841936-64) is following the sentient
player at (-1521038-64) that is not on
a friendly chain"
I tried starting the second map, "Kuban2" and after the truck ride, the same thing happens! The friendlies are Germans with Russian names, too! I get the same script error, but with different adresses.
I removed all other maps in my UO file, (except the other maps made by Yorkshire rifles) and I'm not running any mods with UO. Should I remove these maps too, and the maps/mods in my regular COD main file?
Please help!!!
Thanks! |

Namphibian Joined: March 19th, 2005 Posts: 422 | Seeing as this is a pretty major SP addon for CoD UO, for once (I stress, this is a once-off, I just happened to be in the mood to write something at the time and I have no intentions of becoming codfiles' regular review guy, sorry…) I'm going to try and do something closer to a full review.
Straight into it, then. Architecture? Well, it’s easily on par with the original Grey Matter levels, especially for a community SP release. The first couple of maps look something like a cross between a Normandy setting and the Ponyri sequence of UO, taking place in farm/rural settings but moving into urban areas toward the end of the second map. There's some really good use of scripting worth mentioning, something you don't see a whole lot of in the custom SP department. The first few levels contain a couple of truck rides, the latter of which you'll be sniped at lazily by scattered German resistance from the surrounding town, and a more intense kubelwagen chase in the second level. Armoured vehicles, particularly halftracks, are used to good effect and the challenge of picking off the gunner from behind the bullet shield forces you to shoot and move strategically. Speaking of which, Geezer’s vehicle skins look a lot cleaner and are generally a big improvement on the default. And you can’t go without mentioning is the custom intro and outro complete with period music and photos, which give a brief overview of the historical facts and dates behind the actual battles for the Caucasus on the Eastern Front.
The extraction across the bridge while being shot at by a Panzer in the second map was chaotic fun – bullets zinging off the metal as I made a suicidal dash across the river, returning fire with my ppsh, sneaking up behind an enemy soldier to give him the business end of my pistol. That said the third map was probably my favorite, with the factory/forest at night/trenches layout looking pretty unique, weird as it sounds. Sabotaging the oil wells was a realistic nod to Stalin's 'scorched earth' policy at that point in the war and helped give the mod a sense of time and place.
The gameplay is nicely ironed out from the at-times-ridiculous difficulty of UO and stays at a fairly consistently manageable level throughout. Although your opposition are more numerous and relentless in the fourth and fifth maps, you have bucketloads more ammo at your disposal, due in no small part to the increasing frequency of enemies using captured Russian guns which was a nice realistic touch when used sparsely in the early maps but started to get a bit ridiculous further down the track. At the start of the game I had to make do with the German weapons, but as I progressed through the levels I had the luxury of being able to choose between swapping my SVT40 for a scoped rifle, etc. I didn't run into the same frustrations that I did on SP Aachen, where I would often get ambushed by Germans shooting from all directions where seconds earlier there had been a peaceful courtyard with no one in sight. Part of that's probably my own fault (I'm still used to CoD 2's autosave system and had to get back into the habit of keeping my finger poised over F5) When I did get caught off guard, it felt more like a deliberately planned trap (MG34 aimed through a spy hole in the wall, etc) instead of a misjudgement of the difficulty level and most of the time I had the chance to react before I got shot to bits. Artillery can really ruin your day, if you’re three feet away from storming an enemy-held building and suddenly get shellshocked preventing you from turning or reacting quickly enough to knock out enemies at close range where they can’t miss.
Problems, well I didn't come across a whole lot. At one point in the first map (retreating to the farm) I did get caught out in the open with the dreaded heat-seeking artillery strike that kills you no matter where you are. I also felt the originality so evident in the first couple of maps was starting to die off a bit toward the pack's end, with the fourth and fifth maps being similar to the Kharkov campaign of UO (the 'maze' of ruins and the destroyed cathedral in the fourth and the start of the fifth map respectively were well done though) Even with this theme, the actual professionalism of the architecture remains untouchable.
Pretty much the only area in which I think this pack could be improved would be with the addition of some custom voice acting and new characters/allies to fight alongside to give it more of a cinematic feel. I'm no expert at mapping for CoD but given the level of scripting that Yorkshire Rifles has put in already, I'd guess it's not too much more of a stretch. Again though this is just another one of my frustrations with the CoD SP scene at large, no-one’s fault in particular.
Overall, an action-packed single-player addon for UO, well worth your download and my favourite of Yorkshire Rifles’ quality map packs. |

ManWithTheRifle From: Joined: May 31st, 2005 Posts: 50 | Yes, that's right, I downloaded it, startedit up and - gasp! - I wasn't rebuffed back to the title screen with some "cannot give player weapons as he already has two" or some other nonsensical error message.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that you're unarmed at the very start.
Anyway, the map (what I've done so far) is pretty hard - going through all those Germans with only a bolt action (oh, where are you, accessible submachine guns with reasonable amounts of ammo?) - I haven't made it through the first level yet.
While I can understand why you don't have music, it would be nice (adds to the atmosphere.)
So, quick, figure out why this file will run on a Mac and adjust your other UO maps accordingly |
ManWithTheRifle From: Joined: May 31st, 2005 Posts: 50 | While I can play a good part of the campaign, the game "errors" me back to the title screen for some reasons:
Map 1: while retreating to the farmhouse, when I emerge from the German forward command bunker I get this error message:
"model 'xmodel/v_ge_lnd_halftrack_d' not precached"; although I've seen at least one halftrack before this. Maybe the custom stuff backfired, huh?
Map 2: Just when I am about to join in the battle for Krasnador, the game quits with this error message:
"entity is not an array"
Map 3 I've seen no errors, but I'm still trying to survive the German attack.
I've tried to contact Aspyr about this sort of thing, and I might try again...
Good work, though, Yorkshire! |
MasterFreaky From: Joined: January 11th, 2007 Posts: 36 | This addon was AMAZING! I loved every second of it! Keep up the good work Yorkshire! Also, I know this took you 9 months to make, but for your next project it would be AWESOME if you could do a Winter War map. I understand if you're tired because all 5 maps kick serious butt! |
ManWithTheRifle From: Joined: May 31st, 2005 Posts: 50 | Map 3 went without a hitch, and Map 4 seems to be doing pretty well, though I keep dying (I've been through what seems like the entire rubble maze, but I can't get to wherever the goal is) |
Vassili_Zeitzsev From: (Barrie) Joined: January 14th, 2007 Posts: 21 | if you read the last part of the readme he ways this is the last campaign/mod/etc for all CoD titles, so there won't be any winter war maps thingys. as for this...welll. im speechless. very good work man have a a and another to wash the donut down.

torste Joined: September 27th, 2005 Posts: 5 | I just got done playing through the "Beyond Rostov" campaign and I am very impressed. This campaign is very good. I wished their were more campaigns like this one for single player. Yourshire Rifles your the best man. Your very talented and I can't believe you done this for free. I paid for other World War II PC games that were not even close to being as good as this campaign that you did. Thank you for what you did. I know it took a lot of time and effort to do this campaign and it shows. I hope someday that some game developer recognizes you for your work. |

(Spoilers)
My favourite parts that come to mind are how one of the cabins in the first map gets perforated like cheese, not a lot of sp maps have that feature! Also, the scripted bits like when the Panzer IV knocks out the T-34 and you don't know what to do because you don't have antitank weapons and all of a sudden your saved by angels on your shoulders. I also like the general idea of fighting a losing battle, always retreating, since it's uncommon in these games. |

Goner From: (Rotterdam) Joined: September 18th, 2003 Posts: 4 | I found out that you just have to keep moving to cross those open stretches ... if you take cover, they get you.
So whenever I got stuck I just started sprinting from cover to cover and kept advancing. |

Really enjoyed this immensely. Its sad there won't be more maps made. |

This is very well done. The intro screens were great and the map was a nice touch.
The levels play very well - the graphics were nice and scripting was defiantly on par with the original if not better in some cases.
Thank You very much !!! |
Vassili_Tzaisev From: (Buenos Aires) Joined: September 22nd, 2009 Posts: 288 | I think this is the best sp custom map /well, maps) ever made for CoD1/UO.
It's completly historicall, it has characters, dialogues, and very funny missions. And the intro is also excelent, because it "gets you in History".
Excelent, as all the sp maps by Yorkshire Rifles.
Good job!! |
