Description:
Namphibian has returned after a long break from skinning with what he says are his last Waffen SS skins for Call of Duty 2. Certainly he'll go out with a bang in this area, as these ones really excel in not only quality but functionality as well... that is, if you're a DX9 user. stick out tongue He's included brand new lighting maps for those higher-end users to appreciate, but even the DX7 guys (like me smile ) will enjoy playing with these sweet new skins. I think he accurately sums up the description in the ReadMe: "The end result reminds me of the SS troops in Band of Brothers (Episode 3, Carentan and Ep. 5, Crossroads)." If you're a fan of Band of Brothers, you'll for sure love these skins, but even if you've never heard of BoB, check out the screenshots below and download Namphibian's latest wonders! Two Thumbs Up!

Plane Tree is probably my favourite type of German camouflage, so
I (completely original concept as you can see) decided to make some
realistic Waffen SS guys of my own. The end result
reminds me of the SS troops in Band of Brothers
(Episode 3, Carentan and Ep. 5, Crossroads) This will likely be the
last German skins I do, certainly the last SS ones anyway.

Gear Listing/Changes:

-M42 'slate grey' SD helmet with half chicken wire basket (greatcoat
troops)
-Type II Plane Tree 1/2 helmet cover (regular troops)
-Type II Plane Tree 1/2 Tarnjacke (smock)
-Waffen SS Oak A Zeltbahn
-Waffen SS belt buckle + collar tabs

Officer:

-Oak A Spring custom-made Feldbluse
-SS Schirmutze (Visor cap)
-Italian camouflage pants

And changed a whole lot of other miscellaneous stuff. See
screenshots for more details. Full normal/specular lighting maps
included for the benefit of DX9 users.

Install Instructions:

Place 'zzzz_BaseOfficer.iwd' and EITHER 'zzz_Springplanetree.iwd'
or 'zzz_Fallplanetree.iwd' (depending on which colour
plane tree camo you want to use) in your main Call of Duty 2
directory
(usually C:/Program Files/Activision/Call of Duty 2/Main).

A couple of notes:

-This skin won't work if you join a Pure server.

-4 pocket camo smocks. Type II Waffen-SS smocks are 2 pocket.
However until the SDK comes out there isn't any way to remove the
pockets from the default model. Same with the shoulderboards and
length of the skirt. Also camo smocks were far more commonly
used than camouflage tunics, especially by infantry, which is why
I have done a smock and not a tunic. In fact I am not even sure
if Plane Tree tunics existed, I have yet to see any photos of one.
In any case, it's a realism trade-off no matter which way you look
at it, so I have chosen what I consider to be the lesser of two
evils.

- High-res. As I can't run high-res character skins I elected to
make these cater for low-end system specs, thus these skins are
NORMAL/REGULAR RESOLUTION. Apologies to all those
with the capability to run high-res. However, it's difficult
for me to test or get screenshots of skins I can't use in game.
Anyway, Ferry's Panzergrenadiers have pretty much got the high-res
department covered as far as that goes.

- Neither myself nor CoDfiles endorses or supports Nazism, Fascism,
the swastika or anything remotely associated with it. The use of
National Socialist/Fascist symbols in this skin is for entirely
historical purposes.

I like the cammo patterns, especially the fall side. You maked a really good job, this is your better human skins for sure. But there are thinks that you need improve Let me give you a couple of suggestions.

1-THE INSIGNIA :about the cap eagle of the officer; you can work even more the cap eagle, the major part of the skinners takes the original photo and after they don't improve it, something like "crop" and "paste", I don't know if this is your case, but if you are working normal-res skins, the detail is more important than the HR because we have less resolution, I mean that you can detail the wings and the body of the eagle with a brush of one pixel, you have to add more detail pixel by pixel.

2-SATURATION: I think that the belt plate have a lot of color, and also the camo patterns, if you try to adjust just a little bit the colors, I thing that you will obtain better looking.Less saturation= better result


3-REALIST LOOKING: Well this is a very little hard to explain by this forum, but, you have to try to "remove" the idea of the constant colors of your mind, all the skinners makes constant colors, (myself included on my last skins). I want explain you that you have to create dirty textures and for example, mark the edges on the uniforms sleeves, on the helmets... This summer I learned new texture techniques, and I will make a tutorial for the rest of the skinners about the basic/advanced artistic concepts. Besides I will release 3 more german skins durig this week,(the final ones) this will be the best work that I maked for COD2 for sure, and you will understand finally what I'm trying to explain you about the non constant colors.

ohhhh one more thing!!!

a little secret!!! try to supress the grain and noise of the tunic in the specular file,
the space that takes the tunic must be totally black except the belts and gear, If you make this; the cammo pattern of the smock will have a lot of more definition, symply try it and If you don't like it, leave the skin as the original way.Two Thumbs Up!

thanks for the feedback ferran, with the level of detail I was working at the pixel-by-pixel level on the sleeve eagle although it just never seemed to look right. Originally the skin was really desaturated, then I took the overall darkness level on the camo down drastically.
